Personal Injury

Tired female driver sitting in auto and massaging

Hi. I’m Dr. Neil Scharf.

Today I’m going to talk about why people struggle and hurt after an accident, sometimes even years after their fender bender. But first things first. If you’ve been driving a car most of your life, the odds are that you’ve been in an auto accident, even a slight fender bender. That means you’ve suffered something, somewhere. Not trying to get you alarmed, but I am trying to tell you the truth so you can make a more informed decision about what you need to do. There was a survey done a few years back and that survey revealed that over 25% of drivers were involved in an auto accident in a five year period.

When was the last time you were involved in any type of accident, either as a driver or a rider? Not a big deal you say, unless you understand what a auto accident does to you internally. Here’s the problem. If you have not been in an auto accident ever, you’re lucky, because there is an auto accident every 14 seconds, so even if you’ve never been in a car accident, some of your friends and family have been and they’ll probably suffer the rest of their life in some instances, even if they never complain to you. Now let’s talk about the injuries that are possible from a car accident, plus a couple of things you should never, ever go without from me… if you’ve been in a car accident. First off, if you’ve been involved in an accident, most likely you have something called whiplash. This is a rapid snapping of your neck. It happens so fast, most of the time you don’t really know you suffered one.

That snapping of your neck can result in injury to your:

  • bones
  • nerves
  • discs
  • muscles
  • ligaments
  • tendons

Well so, how do you know if you have whiplash now? You don’t. You might have some symptoms, but unless I check you out, examine you, take x-rays and document what has happened, you will not know you’ve had a whiplash. You might hurt, but you still need to be examined.

Sometimes when I take an x-ray, and I can’t see the soft tissue, I send you out for an MRI.

Why? Because you’ve had some soft tissue injury and I want to make sure that you have that documented. Don’t wait. Call my office today. We’ll get you scheduled and find out how much damage you do have and what it’s going to take to get you back to as normal as you can get. CALL NOW!

What if you THINK you’re fine? Let me sum that up very simply. You are not fine. If you’re in a car accident, you’ve been hurt. I don’t care if you have symptoms or not, you’ve been injured. If you don’t know what some of the symptoms are, here’s a quick list of some of the symptoms of whiplash:

  • Pain in your face
  • Dizziness
  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Nausea
  • Ringing in your ears
  • Shoulder pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Lower back stiffness
  • Headaches
  • Pain between your shoulder blades
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Blurred vision
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Confusion
